The purpose of this website is to support the contribution of METANET4U, an EU project, to the launch of an important series of publications known as the META-NET White Papers.
This series as a whole attempts to provide a snapshot of every European language from two perspectives: the linguistic and the technological. The linguistic perspective elaborates a language's characteristics in terms of grammar and morphology, whilst the technological perspective describes the extent to which automated processing techniques have been developed for it. These include computer programs that are capable of translation, speech processing, document classification etc.
The function of the White Papers is to raise awareness among politicians, industry, researchers, journalists concerning the key role of such technologies and the respective status of the different languages.
The META-NET Language Whitepaper Series is a result of the collaboration between four projects METANET4U, CESAR, META-NORD, and T4ME, which aggregated in the META-NET network of excellence. This website covers the languages used in countries participating in METANET4U project: Portugal, Spain, UK, Romania and Malta. In order to achieve a major impact, each country is organising its own event at national level.
All events are documented on this site and can be found using the links in the left menu.
META-NET itself is a network of excellence dedicated to fostering the technological foundations of a multilingual European information society. This network falls under the auspices of META, the Multilingual Europe Technology Alliance whose goals are to develop language technologies that will:
The central objective of META-NET is to contribute to the establishment of a pan-European digital platform that supports a new generation of exchange facilities that encompasses both language data and processing tools.
